If you’re into lure fishing, you’ll know that not all soft plastics are created equal. Some might look the part in the packet but fall short on action, durability, or just plain fish-catching ability. The Z-Man MinnowZ, however, is one of those rare lures that ticks all the boxes. Having used them extensively across rivers, canals and lakes, I can confidently say they’ve earned a permanent spot in my tackle box.

Build and Material
The Z-Man MinnowZ is a 3-inch soft plastic paddle tail swimbait designed to imitate the natural movement of live minnows. Made from Z-Man’s proprietary ElaZtech® material, these lures are incredibly soft yet surprisingly tough. Unlike traditional soft plastics that tear after a few fish, these are almost indestructible—unless, of course, you lose them to a snag. The material also gives the lure a natural, flesh-like feel, meaning once a predator bites, it holds on that little bit longer, giving you a better chance of setting the hook.

Action and Versatility of the Z-Man Minnowz
The paddle tail on the MinnowZ is what sets it apart, especially in coloured water. That thumping tail creates a strong vibration, making it easier for predators to home in, even when visibility is low. The versatility of this lure is another major plus.
I’ve had success using it in a variety of ways:
- Straight Retrieve – The key here is understanding the water column. Balancing the jig weight correctly allows you to bring the lure back at a steady pace while keeping that paddle tail thumping. This retrieve style mimics a small baitfish swimming without a care in the world—a deadly technique for zander, perch, and pike.
- Drop and Pause – Letting the lure sink before reeling in with intermittent pauses can be highly effective. The momentary suspension in the water column mimics a struggling or wounded fish, often triggering strikes on the pause.
- Hop/Pop & NED Rig – Whether rigged Texas style or on a NED jig head, small rod tip twitches make the lure bounce along the bottom. Thanks to the buoyant nature of ElaZtech, the lure naturally sits upright, waving enticingly in the current—irresistible to wary predators.
- Chatterbait Trailer – Some paddle tails struggle when used as a trailer for chatterbaits due to water displacement from the blade. However, the MinnowZ keeps its tail action going, likely due to the ultra-flexible ElaZtech material. This combination has accounted for some of my best hits.

Jig Heads & Hook Choices for Z-Man Minnowz
For hook selection, I find a 2/0 to 3/0 hook works best. In terms of jig weights, I’ve experimented with 5-10g, but the sweet spot is 7g (1/4 oz). Z-Man’s Finesse EyeZ jig heads pair perfectly with the MinnowZ, offering a snug fit and balanced action.

Best Colours for UK Waters
Z-Man offers a variety of colours, but I’ve had the most success with Opening Night (white sparkle) and Purple Demon (purple with dark blue). These colours work in both clear and coloured water, which is crucial here in Northamptonshire, where the rivers can often run murky after rainfall.
Storage and Scenting
ElaZtech lures should be stored in their original bags to prevent reactions with other soft plastics. That said, I’ve stored mine in Plano and Westin tubs drizzled in Procure liquid scent without any issues. The material absorbs oil-based scents well, giving an added edge when the bite is slow.

Final Thoughts on the Z-Man Minnowz
I’ve been thoroughly impressed with the Z-Man MinnowZ. They catch fish, they last forever, and they adapt to multiple fishing styles. Whether you’re after perch, zander, or pike, these lures will get results. If you haven’t already, give them a go—just be prepared to get hooked yourself!
